Health Care

Overseas Student Health Cover

Before you apply for your Student Visa, you will have to confirm your admission to the chosen university/college by paying the tuition fee of the first semester and purchasing your OSHC or your Overseas Student Health Cover for the whole duration of your study.

Canada prioritizes health care over everything. It has specialized clinics, hospitals and university health centres that offer top-quality health care services. All of the insurance institutions in Canada offer Health Care Insurance for students during the study period. The insurance generally covers:

  • Medical expenses
  • Accidents and
  • Pharmaceutical expenses

While students are registered in universities or colleges for programs of study, they will be enrolled under the university’s Group Insurance.

After graduating and receiving your Work Permit, you must register under the RAMQ which handles the Health Insurance Plan and the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan. They are responsible for:

  • Managing the eligibility of individuals for the plans
  • Monitoring the remuneration of health professionals
  • Simplifying access to health care

Health Insurance Card

A health insurance card enables you to avail of the services offered under the Health Insurance Plan. If you visit a clinic, hospital or a health professional, it is necessary to take your health insurance card with you.

Pharmacists

Pharmacists or chemists are also healthcare professionals who are well-versed in the effective usage of medications. The country has approximately 10,000 pharmacies. Based on your doctor’s prescription, pharmacists will guide you with the supply of medications you require. They can also offer advice without a prescription.

24/7 Emergency Care

Canada offers high standard emergency centres and is trained to handle all sorts of medical situations. Most hospitals are equipped with a team of emergency specialists who are trained to provide CPR and life support.

In case of emergencies and you are not able to travel to the nearest hospital, dial 911 to get an ambulance. In case you are unsure about your condition, you can call 811 to reach Info-Santé. The responding nurse will counsel you with the right medical advice.

Walk-in Clinics

Canada is home to many walk-in clinics. They provide medical care and typically cater to non-emergency patients. Although they offer 360 care, for serious and special care, it is advisable to visit a hospital or a specialist doctor.

Specialist Doctors

Speciality doctors are experts in one specific area of medicine. In case you have serious health issues, your general doctor will refer you to consult a specialist doctor for further treatment and care.
